Do you need a VPS for a trade copier?
It depends on how the copier reaches your accounts. If it works through a program in your trading terminal, that terminal has to stay open, on your computer or on a VPS (a rented server that runs 24 hours a day). If it connects to the platform from its own servers, nothing has to run on your side.
When something must stay running
- MetaTrader 4 and 5 with an Expert Advisor (EA). The EA lives inside your terminal. Close the terminal, shut down the computer, or lose the internet, and that account stops sending or receiving copies until it is back.
- Desktop copiers. Copiers that run as software on your computer (local copiers) copy only while that computer is on.
A computer that sleeps at night or restarts for updates is the most common reason copies are missed. A small Windows VPS near your broker's servers avoids that; many brokers and prop firms offer one, sometimes free above a trading volume.
When nothing has to run on your side
- Platforms with an API such as cTrader, TradeLocker and DXtrade: a cloud copier connects to them directly. Your computer can be off.
- MT4 and MT5 through a cloud bridge such as MetaApi: the MetaTrader account runs in the bridge's cloud, so no terminal of yours needs to be open. The bridge has its own price.
- Browser-based platforms such as MatchTrader, when the copier drives the web platform from its own servers.
Which to choose
- Only cTrader, TradeLocker, DXtrade or MatchTrader accounts: no VPS needed.
- MT4/MT5 accounts, and you already run a terminal 24/7: the EA is the simplest and adds no cost.
- MT4/MT5 accounts without a machine always on: a VPS for the terminals, or a cloud bridge.
- Mixed: you can combine them. A source on an EA can feed destinations on APIs, and the other way round.

FAQ
What happens to copies while my terminal is off?
The EA cannot receive them. When it comes back, a delayed opening can be refused by the "maximum signal delay" setting so that you do not enter late; closes are still applied.
Does the VPS have to be near the broker?
Closer is faster, but for copying a few trades a day any reliable VPS works. Uptime matters more than milliseconds.
Do prop firms allow a VPS?
Most do, and some provide one. Read your firm's rules on third-party tools.
