Copy trading on a prop firm account without breaking the daily loss limit
Most prop firm accounts that fail while copying trades do not fail on the maximum loss. They fail on the daily loss limit, often on a day that did not look dangerous on the source account. Here is why, and how to set a copier so it stops first.
Why copies breach the daily limit
- Size. A copier scales the source's lot to each account. A 1 % risk on the source can be 2 or 3 % on a smaller funded account if the lot mode is not proportional.
- Several positions at once. Five open trades on the source are five open trades on every copy: the floating loss adds up before anything closes.
- Floating losses count. Firms measure equity, not just closed trades. A position that dips and recovers can breach the limit while it is down.
- The firm's clock. The day does not start at midnight on your computer. It starts when the firm resets it: midnight in Prague for some, 5 PM New York or "server time" for others. A loss at 11 PM can belong to the next day, or to the one before.
How firms measure the day
There are two common ways, and they give different numbers:
- From the day-start balance: the limit is the balance at the reset minus x % of the initial size (or of that balance).
- From the higher of balance and equity at the reset: if you held a winning position through the reset, the day starts from that higher figure, and the room you have is smaller than you think.
Read your firm's rule word by word: "of the initial balance" and "of the day's starting equity" are not the same limit.
Set the copier to stop first
- Use a lot mode tied to the account: risk % from the stop loss, or proportional to the balance, rather than a fixed lot.
- Put a daily loss rule on each funded account, measured like the firm measures it, reset on the firm's clock, at 70 to 80 % of the allowance. It should stop new copies and close the account's positions.
- Add a maximum loss floor below the starting size, with the same margin.
- Cap simultaneous trades and refuse signals without a stop loss.
In HydraSync FX the prop firm setup creates these rules from the firm's own published limits; for any other firm you enter them yourself. The details are in Prop firms.
FAQ
Is 80 % of the allowance too cautious?
It leaves room for slippage, spreads widening at the reset, and the seconds a close takes. Most traders keep 70 to 80 %.
Does the firm's dashboard or my copier decide?
The firm's dashboard always decides. A copier rule only helps you stop before it.
What if the source account is also a prop account?
Then it has its own limit too: protect both, each with its own rules.
